Description

Whale galaxy

This is a crop of my image at http://astrob.in/180245/C/

First test of my new Astrodon RGB filters with the Atik ONE 6.0. I am happy to see that even from my light polluted location I am able to image 10min per filter and still keeping the peak in the first half of the histogram . RGB 15-14-15 x 600sec (2 nights). Processed in Pixinsight and PS5. Despite noise reduction applied in several steps, noise is still persistent due to the required strong boost of the signal against the light polluted background.

Explanation: NGC 4631 is seen edge-on only 25 million light-years away and is similar in size to our own Milky Way. This galaxy's slightly distorted wedge shape resembles a Whale. The dark interstellar dust clouds, a yellowish core, young blue star clusters and reddish Ha-regions can be identified. The small elliptical companion galaxy NGC 4627, appears above the Whale Galaxy.
